The Space Between the Breath
“Awareness is like the sun. When it shines on things, they are transformed.”
— Thich Nhat Hanh
Zanshin matures when we move from narrow focus to spacious awareness. It begins with the breath, but like ripples on still water, our attention can expand—gently and naturally—to include body sensations, ambient sound, temperature, even the subtle emotional weather within. True Zanshin isn’t hyperfocus; it’s calm receptivity—an open readiness that senses more, not less. This awareness doesn’t cling or judge; it simply includes. In that openness, life becomes fuller, richer, more dynamic.
Today’s Practice:
After your seated meditation, pause and keep your eyes softly open. Let your attention rest on the whole space around you. Notice sounds, light, and movement—without labeling, grasping, or turning toward them. Repeat this again during a walk, while working, or even waiting in line. Zanshin means noticing the whole field—and staying calmly centered within it.
